Another week of gouache is done. This week went quite a bit better than last week. I’ve been working on being more patient while I paint and letting previous layers dry before continuing. This has to be, by far, by biggest hurdle with learning water medias. With oils, I just adjust the amount of medium added to the paint and I can go over the previous wet layer immediately. Sitting a waiting after each layer has proven to be a challenge.
This crab painting has turned into one of my favorite of this series so far. I spent a very long time working on it despite how messy it looks. I still don’t know if I’m using gouache “correctly” but I like my results so far. I seem to move between translucent watercolor looking layers and more opaque layers.
I know Day 22 is more of a still life than animal, but I couldn’t resist. I love skulls. This painting presented the need for a really nice purple for the flowers, which I didn’t achieve. My red is too warm to mix a nice purple. All of my efforts turned muddy. I’ll be buying a tube of Dioxazine Purple in the near future to be prepared for the next rare need for a nice bright purple. I have Dioxazine Purple in oils and I really love it. It’s a powerful single pigment that mixes beautifully.
Only seven more days of the 30 day gouache challenge. 🙂
I appreciated you sharing your experience in 30 days of Gouache.
