I really put some time into this painting this last week, but unfortunately, it doesn’t really look a whole lot different than it did last week. When I was uploading the picture, I briefly confused it with last week’s progress shot.
My plan next week is to go in and glaze over a lot of that middle area with purples and some blues right along the horizon to push it back further. I’m still struggling to differentiate between the foreground and middle distance, so hopefully those purples really help. Everything is also roughly at the same saturation and detail level which makes the whole thing look a little on the flat side. So my plan for that is to really get some sharp details in the foreground and maybe soften some of those far out details even more.
The palette knife experiment for textured rocks didn’t work out as well as I wanted so I brushed out most of it. I may try to go back in and add some little bits back in later, but it needs more experimentation on my part before I can really integrate it into my work.
For me the problem is in the middle area – just behind the tree. It doesnt recede enough. The far background is believable and that kind of ambiguity could be brought forward into the middle ground. You could even make the tree more dominant – which I presume is your subject. That could also help with the recession. Hope that helps.
Thank you for the input. That is essentially the plan, it’s just a matter of executing it.
best of luck
