This painting is a 7.5×7.5 inch oil on canvas. It is a bit experimental and a total departure from my normal style. I really love it though. This was the look I was after with my previous black canvas paintings that I failed to achieve because I just couldn’t not paint the entire surface. It is also more of the look I was going for with the last kitty painting I did. I’m super satisfied and happy with how this painting turned out. I think there will be quite a few more black canvas paintings in the future. Does the fact that I left so much gesso make it a mixed media?
Originally, this cat’s name was Grey Kitty (named by my then 4 year old), but over the years his name evolved. For a long while he was named Shit Bird for his complete inability to properly use a litter box. The name that stuck is Grey Turd because, well, he is a turd. He was born ferrule and lives most of his life outside, which probably explains it, but he randomly and viciously attacks people. He’ll be totally fine, purring in your lap and then with absolutely zero warning, he will sink his fangs into your arm or hand, scratch the crap out of you, and take off running. I’m pretty sure he has a split personality because the rest of the time he is excessively and annoyingly affectionate.
I think this painting is a very good representation of him since it looks so much like a lion and he is a half-wild animal that just so happens to live around my house. The kids avoid him at all costs and my older dog, Shanzi, despises him and seems to enjoy chasing him out of the house from time to time. He seems to love Shanzi though and goes out of his way to rub himself all over her while she growls at him. He tires to rub on the puppy too, but Whiskey gets too excited and tries to play which freaks him out and it ends with hisses and yelps every time.
Really lobe this style! I wish I could learn to be this free 💟
Thank you! I never could have done this a few months ago. Try doing a 30 in 30 challenge and actually stick with it. Your painting will definitely loosen up.
Nice one! You really captured his cat intensity!
Thank you! 🙂
