It has been a while since I’ve painted onions. If you’ve been following me this year, you’ll remember the Red Onion Trio I finished back in February. I think onions are really fun to paint and I use them in nearly everything I cook so they’re always in the house. It can be a challenge to achieve the thinness of the paper but I like a little challenge. This is the first in a series of 9 upcoming yellow onion paintings. So brace yourself. Hopefully, they won’t sting your eyes.
This onion went pretty smoothly aside from one little hiccup where I dropped it in my palette. I was painting in the background a bit too aggressively and knocked the canvas off my easel. The bottom edge landed right in my palette. That was really the worst of it. Catching wet paintings is a bit of a win/lose situation. I prevented the canvas from face planting in my palette, but came away with hands completely covered in paint and the need to repaint the background. I’m lucky it was a simple background and I managed not to smear black all over my freshly painted onion. I would’ve taken a picture, but there was seriously paint everywhere. I’m usually a pretty clean painter too. :/
Follow me on Instagram to see photos of this painting, as well as many of my other paintings, in progress.
The onion paintings are really beautiful! Looking at an every day subject with artistic eyes!!!!
Thank you! The more I study the onions to paint them, the prettier they get. Who would’ve guessed. 🙂
Love your onion!
Thank you! 🙂
