This painting began it’s life as a frozen blue landscape that just didn’t quite work. It took me a very long time of fiddling around with this landscape to finally come to the conclusion that the reason it didn’t work was because the aspect ratio of the panel was off. I think this scene needs to be painted on a very long, narrow canvas. Some day I may revisit it, but then again, I may not.
I lightly sanded the landscape a little to remove the brush strokes and held onto it for about a year until I came across a subject that would fit its dimensions. I tried to finish this young chicken in one sitting, but the now vertical lines of the landscape dictated a second coat, which all worked out in the end since I did a better job the second go around anyway.
My husband the critic says I made it look too intelligent and that it’s very brown… and maybe not in a good way. I didn’t like the green I had originally painted the background, but I may not like the brown either. it is a lot. All in all, it isn’t my favorite painting. I may go back and work on it some more at a later date. I have to chalk it up to a cursed panel. Nothing painted on it will really works.
I’m curious about how you go about painting over an old painting… I have a few that I’ve never really loved all that much, but the panels would come in handy. Is it really just simply a case of sanding the bumps smooth and then proceeding with things as you usually would?
For the most part it is that simple. I thought about priming it and even bought some oil based primer but was too lazy.
I like this, including the colors. Works for me.
Thank you! 😊🙏
