I started these peppers about the same time as the commissioned peppers I finished a few weeks ago. I just loved this photo so much and had an odd-shaped canvas I didn’t know what to do with. It was meant to be. Since I wasn’t a fan of painting the barn wood in the commission, I decided to skip it on this painting and I like the result. There was the same issue as the commission of the painting appearing flat, so I again exaggerated the lights and darks to make it more dimensional.
I’m super happy with how this turned out and I unexpectedly really liked working larger than I have been. Although I’m definitely not used to using so much paint at one time. Mixing up large piles of paint and using larger brushes took some getting used to. I was really excited to get this painting done because I thought it would be a good step toward working larger. I have since started a painting that is 24×30 inches. It was slightly less intimidating because this painting went so smoothly.
Unfortunately, this original painting won’t be for sale anytime soon. I realized too late that the canvas was warped so I’ll either have to re-stretch it on new stretcher bars, gift it, or offer it at a discount. I haven’t decided yet. I suppose this is what I get for trying to use up old cheap canvas. Never again.
love how you did this painting.
Thank you! 🙂
You are most likely using oils. That is such a pleasure. I can only use acrylics or watercolors now because of becoming totally allergic to oils. I love still life also, a lot, actually. However, students are not that excited about still life, so we are doing more landscape or floral stuff. I love how you are painting your subjects. Definitely, looks attractive and draws the viewer in.
Thank you, I only use oils. I’ve tried acrylic and watercolor, but don’t like the way they handle. Are you actually allergic to the oils or to the turps? I heard of people having problems with the turps, but the oils are pretty benign.
